Design Concepts for the Web

8.27.09

What I learned:

A new acronym—WYSIWYG (Pronounced wizzy-wig) = what you see is what you get.

We will be learning code which is quite exciting because it will lay the foundation for our future in web design. Baby Steps as they say. We will write tables but not with table based layouts. We will only be dealing with single column layouts in this class.

Flash is good for flair and product display as long as it doesn’t contain any content you care about. Also Flash is not indexible on Google and does not work with government sites because it is not compatible with vision impaired programs which are mandatory for government sites; information must be accessible to everyone. This is why we will not be learning this program.

It was also revealed that one of the best code editors is Coda which is considered an IDE. IDE stands for Integral Developer Environment. In this program you can see how what you are doing effects the program through a viewing pane on the screen. We also may or may not be using a graphics program call Fireworks. Fireworks, according to the Adobe website, allows you to “create and optimize images for the web more quickly and accurately than before.” It was neat to learn that we will be working with Media Temple which will be our domain for work that we accomplish. Media Temple is a site that hosts sites for both large and smaller businesses.

Overall I must say that I am excited to get started and that a double-shot caramel mocha goes a long way if consumed before class.

  1. Awesome blog site name! Great job Jai. Good summary of what we talked about. I see that you did a little outside research, which is great. Be sure to include links and images to accompany your findings. It will make the blog much more interesting to read (for your fellow students when they take a peek). In future posts, dedicate most of your words to outside research. This is where you will record your expanded findings on the topics that interest you the most from week-to-week. Again, great job.
